A trial of glass in roadbase currently underway at Laverton will resolve the dilemma we have had at the site for some time – what on earth to do with the 100,000 tonnes of crushed glass taking up space on the Laverton sales floor.
The massive stockpile of material has been the subject of much consideration but an idea has been brewing – to use crushed glass as an additive in roadbase products.
Projects team member Phil Denham has taken charge of the trial which he believes will result in a range of new products comprising crushed glass in the future.
“After a year of searching, as our glass pile got bigger and bigger, we managed to secure funding to build a trial road from Sustainability Victoria, The National Packaging Covenant and Visy,” Phil said.
“After this we had the difficult task of developing a trial road at a busy operational site with a number of competing projects going on simultaneously. Construction started and finished on the trial road in November 2009, with people from Production, Projects, Transport, Sales and Asphalt all getting involved.
“Testing and monitoring will continue on the road until mid 2010, in consultation with VicRoads and ARRB.
