Alex Fraser, Finalist in Premier’s Sustainability Awards 2020

Alex Fraser is delighted to be shortlisted as a finalist in the 2020 Premier’s Sustainability Awards for its Sustainable Supply Hub in Laverton. The recycling heavyweight has been nominated alongside the Woolworths Group in the Large Business category prestigious awards.  

Alex Fraser’s Laverton Sustainable Supply Hub is a Large Business category finalist in Premier’s Sustainability Awards 2020 

Alex Fraser’s Sustainable Supply Hub (‘The Hub’) is Victoria’s biggest integrated recycling facility. It recovers diverse, high volume, priority waste streams and recycles them into quality construction products to supply metropolitan infrastructure development. 

The Hub produced more than 390,000 tonnes of high recycled asphalt in its first year of operation.

The Hub produces sustainable construction materials on an unprecedented scale and has established strong end-markets with an urgent demand for recycled products. 

Officially opened in May 2019 by Victorian Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio, the Hub exceeded all expectations in its first year of production, recycling and supplying Victorian road and rail projects with more than:  

• 200,000 tonnes (equivalent to one billion bottles) of recycled glass sand, saving 1 million kilograms of CO2 
• 390,000 tonnes of high recycled asphalt, saving 3.3 million kilograms of CO2. 
• 1 million tonnes of recycled roadbase and aggregates, saving 5.5 million kilograms of CO2 

The Large Business category recognises businesses with more than 200 employees, that are leading in the implementation of sustainable outcomes in Victoria. 

The Sustainable Supply Hub is helping Victoria continue to lead the way in recycling and reusing valuable materials.

Alex Fraser Managing Director Peter Murphy said he was delighted to see the Sustainable Supply Hub project shortlisted.  

“Our Sustainable Supply Hub is a prime example of how Victoria continues to lead the way in recycling and reusing valuable materials.  

“The Hub utilises a range of cutting-edge technologies to recycle on an unprecedented scale and help Victoria build greener roads and rail. It’s great to see the innovation of our people and our customers recognised.  

Sustainability Victoria CEO Claire Ferres Miles congratulated Alex Fraser on their achievement, and said the project demonstrated an innovative approach to driving a more sustainable future. 

The Hub turns Victoria’s “problem glass” into recycled glass sand, saving 1 million kilograms of CO2.

“The continued year-on-year growth of the Awards reflects optimism and momentum to achieve Victoria’s commitment to transition to a circular and zero net emissions economy to reduce, re-use and recycle,” Ferres Miles said. 

“From volunteer groups dedicating countless hours to large businesses taking action, it is inspiring to see the quality of varied and innovative submissions this year.” 

Now in their 18th year, the Premier’s Sustainability Awards are Victoria’s most highly recognised annual sustainability awards program comprising of 10 categories.  

Winners will be announced at the Premier’s Sustainability Award’s online ceremony to be held on Wednesday 16 December. Premier Daniel Andrews will personally select the winners of the overall awards, the Premier’s Recognition Award and Premier’s Regional Recognition Award, from this year’s list of finalists. For more information, photos and profiles of all finalists, visit sustainabilityawards.vic.gov.au
