Alex Fraser: A Pledge to People Development
August 29, 2024

Alex Fraser is committed to investing in its people and developing their skills and capabilities to support the company’s growth and innovation.
Transport Manager Mario Tenaglia and experienced Driver Jarrod Leckie envisioned a formal training program amid the COVID pandemic to enhance the existing induction and training frameworks for new and current employees. Their perseverance paid off in 2023 when Jarrod registered for a Certificate IV Training and Assessment (TAE40122) program, with the support of Alex Fraser and the Transport team.

Mario explains that the launch of this initiative offered multiple advantages.
“This program benefits both Alex Fraser and our employees. Truck drivers receive hands-on guidance from experienced colleagues, and trainer drivers gain formal recognition and confidence in their instructional roles.”
Jarrod’s pioneering efforts paved the way for a new milestone in 2024, the launch of an internal Certificate IV in Training and Assessment program for a further 16 Alex Fraser and Suncoast Asphalt employees from operational and administrative roles. This initiative aims to cultivate a team of certified workplace trainers and assessors, equipped to deliver top-tier, compliant training and refine training materials and methodologies.
Training & Development Lead Mike Bacarella oversees the selection, enrolment, delivery and evaluation of the program.

Trainees completed their training presentations to a group of colleagues and an assessor.
“Alex Fraser’s collaboration with Fortress Learning, brings the program to life on-site, blending bi-monthly workshops with self-directed learning. Each participant has been presenting their training projects to an audience over the past few weeks. They’ve been building their confidence and ability to train others, while securing a nationally recognised qualification, and accelerating their careers.”
“This program is more than a skill-building exercise; it promotes continuous improvement, learning, and compliance. It’s a personal growth journey, aligning with Alex Fraser’s strategic vision of ‘investing in our future’ by empowering its people.”
Covering competencies like learning program development, workplace learning facilitation, and competence assessment, the program participants each bring their unique skillsets. The participants provide input and feedback on the existing and new training resources and methods, as well as identify and share best practices and lessons learned from their own experience and learning.

The Queensland team celebrates the completion of their training presentations.
Mike explains that for the participants, the program is a gateway to personal advancement, leveraging their hands-on experience to enhance training delivery within Alex Fraser.
“Trainees completed their training presentations to a group of colleagues and an assessor, as well as 1:1 training presentations. They were offered support and feedback on their content and delivery, as well as engagement with the audience. This is a practical step to provide them with the confidence to hone their skills for future training.”
Alex Fraser’s inaugural Training and Development Program is expected to be completed later this year, with 16 students set to graduate with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
