Brunswick Street Fitzroy paves the way with recycled construction materials – Project Profile
June 12, 2018

Project overview
As part of their annual maintenance program, the City of Yarra conducted resurfacing of Brunswick Street including additional road markings in line with their focus on bicycle safety. Brunswick Street is one of Fitzroy’s busiest shopping streets so timing and resourcing was crucial.
Getting the job done with minimal disruption
In order to minimise the impact on local shops and residents, the works to repave nearly 5,000m2 were conducted at night and during the least busy days of the week, from 8pm to 5.30am on Sunday and extending into the early days of the week.
Alex Fraser Asphalt more than doubled the normal amount of resources for similar sized projects, deploying two two-metre profilers, four Bobcat profilers, three street sweepers and four paving crews. Line marking, coloured surfacing, raised pits and valves and reinstated detector loops were also provided.
The accelerated approach required intense traffic management. Over 50 traffic controllers ensured traffic was redirected and, most importantly, pedestrians were kept clear from the works.
The works were completed in one shift, with most of the line marking carried out behind the crews. The balance of the works was carried out over the following two nights, to great satisfaction of the City of Yarra.
Working with City of Yarra to achieve environmental savings
To ensure the project was conducted in the most environmentally sustainable way, Alex Fraser Asphalt played an important role in advising City of Yarra which products would maximise carbon savings.
In line with VicRoads specfication 407, Warm Mix Asphalt incorporating Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and a percentage of recycled glass was used. Selecting approximately 400 tonnes of recycled materials reduced fume emissions and greenhouse gases by more than 30 per cent.
The recycled glass used in the product was diverted from landfill and all asphalt removed from the existing road surface was processed for reuse in future projects.
