Alex Fraser has broken ground on the next phase of its crushing plant at its Northern Sustainable Supply Hub, with piling completed in May.

Managing Director Peter Murphy explains how this stage of the plant construction will enhance material processing, blending advanced technology with well-proven methods.

“This investment is the next stage for our existing crushing plant, and compliments the $13 million crushing plant addition which was commissioned in 2024 to process rock and asphalt. The next stage includes an additional crusher with multiple magnets and screens, to efficiently process concrete and brick. It will integrate well with the existing secondary and tertiary crushers, and includes our largest ever picking station. This new addition is designed to improve the work environment for employees, and boost throughput and efficiency.”

The commissioning of this new stage is anticipated to be completed in early 2026.

This next phase will integrate with the existing crushing plant at Alex Fraser’s Northern Sustainable Supply Hub.

Project Manager Garry Baker is overseeing the project. He explains the innovations that will be implemented once the new phase is operational.

“The old plant was very analogue, whereas the new one incorporates innovative technologies, digitisation, and automation.”

Safety and design features of the new picker’s hut have been considered.

“We have made several ergonomic improvements in the new picker’s hut, better safety features and improved climate control.”

“One promising feature of the new plant is the provision for future automation including potentially robotics overseen by an employee. This addition would improve ergonomics and plant availability, it also offers opportunities for staff to upskill as they learn about AI and robotics advancements.”

Peter adds that Alex Fraser’s commitment to innovation and efficiency is a key driver for these significant capital works.

“This is a very competitive industry so we need to run our plants very well. We put a lot of thought into the design, then try to be very disciplined about how we operate them. Epping is a fantastic location in our network of sites and ultimately, this project is about enhancing our capabilities and ensuring that we stay ahead in the industry.”
