Glass from Wyndham Wheelie Bins is Building Greener Roads
September 26, 2018

Residents in Truganina, Wyndham Vale, Tarneit, Laverton, Werribee, Point Cook and Hoppers Crossing can take pride in knowing their local streets are green roads – built with high quality, sustainable materials made from recyclable waste – including the glass from their wheelie bins.
Alex Fraser crews have worked with local civil contractors to build and repair more than 200 kilometres of roads throughout Wyndham using green roads recycled construction materials manufactured at their state-of-the-art recycling facility in Laverton.
In the past year, 563,314 tonnes of recycled material (including recycled glass sand, asphalt and roadbase) has been supplied to build Wyndham roads. A significant proportion of these materials were locally sourced and recycled – amounting to more than half a million wheelie bins.
The 74,000 households throughout Wyndham generate more than 150,000 wheelie bins of waste glass per year. Alex Fraser recovers this waste and recycles it into quality road building materials; supporting local kerbside recycling schemes and improving the sustainability of our new developments.
Wyndham City Councillor Mia Shaw recently visited Laverton’s Recycling plant to see where residents’ waste glass is transformed into high quality construction materials.
Managing Director Peter Murphy said Alex Fraser had been working with Wyndham’s civil contractors and construction companies for more than 20 years.
“We are proud to have built longstanding relationships with civil contractors such as Winslow, Rokon and Negri Contractors who continue to confidently choose Alex Fraser products for a range of construction applications. Local construction companies Symon Bros, Exel Gray Bruni, Califam Constructions and Norris Plant Hire rely on us to supply sustainable civil construction materials for their Wyndham projects.
“With our new state-of-the-art glass recycling plant and asphalt plant in the final stages at Laverton, Wyndham may soon be known as Australia’s biggest producer of recycled sand and sustainable asphalt,” said Peter.
By choosing Green Roads materials, over the past year, Wyndham has reduced:
- Landfill by 563,314 tonnes
- Carbon emissions by 3,678 kilograms
- Traffic by 1,669 truck movements
