Alex Fraser’s recycling facilities in Queensland play a crucial role in diverting more than a million tonnes of South-East Queensland’s construction and demolition waste annually. This waste is recycled and reused in sustainable infrastructure projects, supporting a circular economy and reducing carbon emissions by up to 65%.

Alex Fraser actively supports Global Recycling Day and its Recycling Heroes theme for 2025 by promoting sustainable recycling practices and innovative recycling technologies for major contractors, developers and government. Alex Fraser’s facilities are equipped to recycle construction materials like concrete, brick, rock, asphalt, and glass to produce high-quality, sustainable products to build greener roads.

Since 1995, the recycled construction material provider has operated well established recycling facilities in Archerfield and Nudgee, servicing the Brisbane area. In 2021, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) granted these facilities a Quarry Registration Certificate, recognising their consistent and uniform supply of highquality recycled products for major roads and infrastructure projects.

One notable project serviced by Alex Fraser’s recycling facilities is the current Cross River Rail project. In this transformational project, thousands of tonnes of demolition material have been recovered and recycled, and the resulting recycled aggregate and roadbase are reused in the new construction. The contractor (UNITY Alliance) worked with Alex Fraser to develop the composition of a new 20mm aggregate, compliant to TMR specifications. Trials, including the inclusion of recycled glass sand for pipe bedding have been conducted at this project site, improving the project’s sustainability outcomes and setting the benchmark for the future.

Recently, the Archerfield Recycling facility has supplied Green Roads Construction Materials to several key projects, including the Watercress Estate in Redbank Plains, the Metroplex Barracks at Wacol, and the Chrisco Warehouse in Berrinba. The strategic location of the recycling facilities was essential for the success of these projects, but equally important was Alex Fraser’s capability to process and supply high-quality recycled materials – all crucial in securing the contracts.

By choosing Alex Fraser’s Green Roads Construction Materials, the customers were able to maintain their timelines, even during wet weather events, as the recycled materials proved highly effective for drainage.

Over the past ten years, more than 1.75 million tonnes of construction and demolition waste have been recycled at Archerfield alone. This effort has not only reduced carbon emissions but also reduced heavy vehicle traffic.
