Mentone’s Green Rail Corridor

In one of the largest projects in Victorian Government history, up to 75 of the state’s level crossings are being removed as part of Victoria’s Big Build.

Material from the level crossing demolition works is being recycled by Alex Fraser into quality
sustainable construction materials and supplied back to several Level Crossing Removal Projects.

Alex Fraser Clarinda recently supplied the Southern Program Alliance for the Mentone and Cheltenham Level Crossing Upgrade in Mentone.

Works commenced in April 2019, with contractors removing the level crossings at Balcome Road in Mentone, and at Cheltenham’s Charman and Park roads. Along with the construction of two new stations, a 3.5 kilometre shared-use path and a new open public space is being built above the rail line. At each location, the rail line is trenched 10 metres underground, requiring extensive works either side, to join the existing lines to the new underground stations.

The Southern Program Alliance’s contractor said that it was an easy choice to use Alex Fraser’s sustainable materials for the project.

“The service provided by Alex Fraser has been very positive. They’re very easy to deal with and are always on time – it’s very hard to fault them.”

“This recycled concrete roadbase is a great alternative that compacts well and can handle the constant wear and tear of machinery on the project.”

Alex Fraser’s Key Account Manager Natalie Montalto said it was fascinating to watch how quickly the level crossing removal project progressed.

“This is a very fast project, with multiple moving parts, every day. It has been challenging, but it’s great to be involved in it. We’re supplying around 170,000 tonnes of material to make this project happen.”

By choosing recycled materials on the Mentone and Cheltenham Level Crossing Upgrade, Southern Program Alliance saved:

• 170,000 tonnes from landfill
• 504 less truck movements
• 1,110 tonnes of carbon emissions
• 185,000 tonnes of natural resources

The project is expected to be completed in early 2021.
