Sustainable Supply Hub Turns Two

Alex Fraser’s Sustainable Supply Hub is the first of its kind in Australia, incorporating an integrated High Recycled Technology asphalt plant, an innovative glass recycling plant and a construction and demolition recycling plant. It produces everything contractors need to build greener roads in Melbourne’s west.

The Hub was opened on May 31, 2019 by the Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio MP.

First established in 2009, this C&D recycling facility has long serviced the demolition and construction sector throughout the western suburbs. It is a major part of Victoria’s networks of C&D recycling facilities, including world-class facilities in Epping to the north of the city, and Clarinda in the south-eastern suburbs. An additional $20 million investment in 2019 expanded the scope of the established C&D recycling facility with a state-of-the-art glass recycling plant and a high recycled technology asphalt production plant. In the years following the original C&D recycling plant also received a multi-million dollar upgrade, ensuring the Hub can confidently continue to recycle more than 1 million tonnes of material every year, helping Victoria to build greener roads.

Earlier this month Alex Fraser received its 2020 Premier’s Sustainability Award.

The Hub recently received a Premier’s Sustainability Award recognising the significant sustainability outcomes realised since 2019, including the production of 400,000 tonnes of recycled sand, saving 1 million kilograms of carbon emissions (compared to natural sand), 780,000 tonnes of high-recycled asphalt, saving 6.6 million kilograms of CO2 and more than 2 million tonnes of recycled roadbase and aggregates, reducing emissions by 5.5 million kilograms when compared with virgin materials.

The Sustainable Supply Hub illustrates only a small part of Alex Fraser’s significant long-term investment in improving resource recovery, infrastructure sustainability and Victoria’s circular economy.

This year The Hub is in the running for a Circle Award, to celebrate progress in circular economy problem solving. The Circle Awards will be judged by an expert panel, featuring NSW Circular’s Chief Circular Economist, Dr Kar Mei Tang among other circular economy experts. Winners will be announced on June 14, 2021, and best of luck to our fellow nominees.
