Working together to build greener roads

Polypave

Alex Fraser’s new asphalt product, PolyPaveTM is in demand with asphalt contractors using the product on road maintenance projects throughout suburban Melbourne.

A resurfacing project by RABS Group in Victoria’s City of Yarra last week marked the first of many streets being revived by asphalt contractors with this new sustainable material.

Several hundred tonnes of PolyPaveTM was used in resurfacing works in Drummond, Fenwick and Newry streets in Carlton North, containing recycled glass, asphalt, and HDPE plastic (hard plastic/bottles).

The project reduced landfill by 295 tonnes and carbon emissions by 1850 kilograms. Approximately 23,000 2L plastic bottles and more than half a million glass bottles were repurposed – equivalent to the fortnightly kerbside recycling collection of almost 900 households.

Recycled asphalt was also incorporated into the green mix design. Justin Strunk, RABS Group Operations Manager said the feedback from his asphalt crew was very positive with the project running seamlessly.

“The feedback from our crews was very positive. The PolyPaveTM mix proved very easy to lay, and all joints married in well. I was really impressed by the results,” said Justin.

Alex Fraser Asphalt GM Brendan Camilleri said it was great to see other asphalt contractors choosing PolyPaveTM.

“The more we opt to use products like PolyPaveTM the easier it will be for other municipalities to recycle problem waste streams, and go on to use recycled products in their infrastructure,” said Brendan.
